Core Concepts

The 8 things every trader must know

Master these before placing any trade. Each one is explained in more depth inside the Academy.

๐Ÿ’ฑ

Currency Pairs

Currencies trade in pairs, e.g. EUR/USD. The first is the base, the second is the quote. The price shows how much quote currency buys one unit of base.

๐Ÿ“

Pips

The standard unit of price movement. For most pairs it is the 4th decimal place.

1.0850 โ†’ 1.0851 = 1 pip
๐Ÿ“ฆ

Lot Sizes

How much you trade.

Standard 1.00 = 100,000
Mini 0.10 = 10,000
Micro 0.01 = 1,000
โš–๏ธ

Leverage

Lets you control a large position with a smaller amount. It magnifies both profits and losses โ€” treat it with respect.

โ†”๏ธ

Spread

The difference between the bid (sell) and ask (buy) price. It is a cost you pay on every trade.

Ask โˆ’ Bid = Spread
๐Ÿ“ˆ

Long & Short

Buy (long) if you expect the price to rise. Sell (short) if you expect it to fall. You can profit in both directions.

๐Ÿ›‘

Stop Loss

A pre-set price where a losing trade closes automatically. Every trade should have one before you enter.

๐ŸŽฏ

Take Profit

A pre-set price where a winning trade closes. Combined with your stop, it defines your risk-to-reward.

Price Action

Candlestick patterns explained

Candles tell the story of the battle between buyers and sellers. Here are six patterns to learn first.

Bullish reversal

Hammer

Small body at the top, long lower wick. Sellers pushed price down but buyers took it back. Most meaningful after a downtrend at support.

Bearish reversal

Shooting Star

Small body at the bottom, long upper wick. Buyers tried to push higher and failed. Watch for it after an uptrend at resistance.

Bullish reversal

Bullish Engulfing

A green candle completely covers the previous red candle's body. Buyers have taken control with strength.

Bearish reversal

Bearish Engulfing

A red candle completely covers the previous green body. Sellers have overpowered buyers โ€” a warning at the top of a move.

Indecision

Doji

Open and close are almost equal. Neither side won. After a strong trend it can signal the move is losing energy.

Bullish reversal

Morning Star

Three candles: a strong red, a small indecision candle, then a strong green. A classic bottom-reversal formation.

Market Hours

When does the market move?

Forex trades 24 hours a day, five days a week, passing between four major sessions. Volatility is highest when sessions overlap โ€” especially London and New York.

  • Asian session โ€” calmer, ranges often form. JPY, AUD and NZD pairs are most active.
  • London session โ€” the largest share of daily volume; breakouts are common.
  • New York session โ€” US data releases drive big moves in USD pairs and gold.
  • Overlap โ€” London + New York is usually the most liquid window of the day.

Times are approximate and shift with daylight saving. Current time:

Risk Management

10 golden rules to protect your capital

Great traders are great risk managers first. Print these and keep them next to your screen.

  1. Risk 0.5โ€“2% per trade. Ten losses in a row should never wipe you out.
  2. Always use a stop loss. Decide where you are wrong before you enter.
  3. Aim for at least 1:2 risk-to-reward. Then you can be right only 34% of the time and still break even.
  4. Set a daily loss limit. Stop trading for the day when you hit it.
  5. Don't move your stop further away. Moving it to protect profit is fine; moving it to avoid a loss is not.
  1. Watch correlation. Buying EUR/USD and GBP/USD together is nearly the same trade twice.
  2. Be careful around big news. Spreads widen and price can jump past your stop.
  3. Never revenge trade. After a loss, step away before the next trade.
  4. Size by the stop, not by feeling. Use the position size calculator above.
  5. Keep a journal. What gets measured gets improved.
Trading Styles

Find the style that fits you

There is no single best way to trade. Choose a style that matches your personality and available time.

โšก

Scalping

Very short trades lasting seconds to minutes, targeting a few pips.

  • Timeframe: 1m โ€“ 5m
  • Needs: focus, low spreads
  • Time: several hours a day
โ˜€๏ธ

Day Trading

Positions opened and closed within the same day. No overnight risk.

  • Timeframe: 5m โ€“ 1H
  • Needs: discipline, routine
  • Time: 2โ€“4 hours a day
๐ŸŒŠ

Swing Trading

Holds trades for days to catch larger moves inside a trend.

  • Timeframe: 4H โ€“ Daily
  • Needs: patience
  • Time: 30โ€“60 min a day
๐Ÿ”๏ธ

Position Trading

Long-term trades held for weeks or months, driven by fundamentals.

  • Timeframe: Daily โ€“ Weekly
  • Needs: macro understanding
  • Time: a few hours a week
Trading Psychology

Your mind is your biggest edge

Most traders don't fail because of a bad strategy โ€” they fail because they can't follow it. Learn to recognise these emotional traps:

๐Ÿ˜จ
Fear

Closing winners too early or skipping valid setups after a loss.

๐Ÿค‘
Greed

Oversizing, ignoring take-profit, or adding to positions without a plan.

๐Ÿƒ
FOMO

Chasing a move that already happened โ€” usually entering at the worst price.

๐Ÿ˜ค
Revenge trading

Trying to win back a loss immediately, often with a bigger size.

๐Ÿ““ Your daily trading routine

  1. Before the session: check the economic calendar, mark key levels, write your bias.
  2. During: only take setups from your plan. Size with the calculator.
  3. After each trade: screenshot it and log entry, exit, reason and emotion.
  4. End of day: review mistakes, not just results.
  5. Weekly: look at your stats โ€” win rate, average R, best and worst setups.

Consistency in the process creates consistency in results.

Market Analysis

Three ways to read the market

๐Ÿ“Š

Technical Analysis

Studies price charts, patterns and indicators to find probable future moves. Assumes price reflects all known information.

  • Support & resistance
  • Trendlines & channels
  • Moving averages, RSI, MACD

Fundamental Analysis

Looks at economic data and central bank policy to judge a currency's real value and direction.

  • Interest rates
  • Inflation (CPI), jobs (NFP)
  • GDP & central bank speeches

Sentiment Analysis

Measures how traders feel about the market โ€” are most people bullish or bearish, and is the crowd too one-sided?

  • Risk-on vs risk-off

Avoid These

Top beginner mistakes

โŒ Trading without a plan

If you can't write down why you're entering, where you'll exit and how much you'll risk, don't take the trade.

โŒ Using too much leverage

High leverage turns small moves into big losses. Size positions by risk, not by what is possible.

โŒ Over-trading

More trades do not mean more profit. Wait for high-quality setups โ€” sitting out is a position too.

โŒ Too many indicators

Five indicators that say the same thing only add confusion. Keep your chart clean and simple.

โŒ Ignoring the news

A big data release can move price 50+ pips in seconds. Always check the calendar first.

โŒ Switching strategies

Every strategy has losing streaks. Test one approach long enough to know if it really works.
